Howard County DUI Sobriety Checkpoint Nabs Twelve

On Friday, June 14, 2013, Howard County police set up a sobriety checkpoint on westbound Route 40 and Governors Run Way in Ellicott City. The sobriety checkpoint, which started late in the evening, extended into early Saturday morning, resulted in 12 arrests, reported The Baltimore Sun.

Police say 998 drivers came through the sobriety checkpoint, and that six were arrested for DUI, or driving under the influence of alcohol. Three more drivers were taken into custody for drug offenses, and three motorists were detained for driving with suspended license.

DUI Check Points Funded by Grants

The DUI sobriety checkpoint, manned by Howard County police and Maryland State troopers, is part of the Checkpoint Strikeforce Campaign, a program funded in part by a grant from the Maryland Highway Safety Office. DUI Sobriety check points, though not legal in some states, have been upheld in Maryland as consistent with the state constitution and the U.S. Constitution, provided they comply with detailed constitutional requirements.

Six Drivers Arrested in Howard Count DUI Sobriety Checkpoint

Sobriety Checkpoint Results in DUI Charges

Howard County Police conducted a DUI sobriety checkpoint on Saturday, December 8, 2012 into the early morning hours of Sunday, December 9, 2012, according to The Baltimore Sun. The sobriety checkpoint was established on westbound US Route 40 and Governors Run Way in Ellicott City.

Five drivers were arrested and charged with DUI charges. One driver was arrested for driving on a suspended license. Approximately 649 vehicles passed through the Checkpoint, which was staffed by Howard County Police.

Drivers Charged with DUI and Driving While Suspended in St. Patrick’s Day Sobriety Checkpoint

On St. Patrick’s Day, Howard County Police conducted a sobriety checkpoint. Two drivers were charged with drunk driving, and another was charged with driving while license suspended. The checkpoint was located on eastbound Maryland Route 175 at Columbia Gateway Drive. A total of 858 vehicles passed through, according to information provided by the Howard County Police. Nurse Cleared of Driving While License Suspended

A 39-year old registered nurse was stopped by Howard County police in Columbia and charged with two counts of driving while license suspended. The penalty for driving while suspended is up to one year in jail, a $1,000.00 fine, and 12 points. The client needed her license to keep her job, and to drive her young children. The case was heard in the District Court for Howard County, located in Ellicott City.

Security Specialist Cleared of Driving While Suspended

Driver Charged with Driving While Suspended

A 45-year old security specialist was charged with driving while license is suspended. The client, who had a high level security clearance, received a speeding ticket and failed to pay the ticket or appear in court on the scheduled trial date. He was later stopped and arrested for Driving While Suspended, after a Howard County police officer ran a routine check of his car’s registration plate.

What are the Penalties for Driving While Suspended in Maryland?

Most violations of Maryland’s traffic laws for driving while license suspended carry penalties of a fine up to $1,000.00 and imprisonment up to 1 year, or both. However, if the reason that the license was suspended was the driver’s failure to pay a citation or court fine, the penalties can be a fine up to $500.00 and imprisonment up to 2 months, or both.

In many cases, drivers receive traffic citations and forget to pay them promptly, or appear in court when the ticket is scheduled for trial.
