Suspect Steals Gun From Arundel Mills Mall Store

shotgun
A Maryland teenager was arrested for breaking into the closed Outdoor World Bass Pro Shop in the Arundel Mills Mall and stealing at least one, if not more, shotguns.*

The teen is all of 19 years old and police are not certain how he was able to break into the shop in the wee hours of the morning. However, police know how he exited the shop, as security footage shows him departing from the scene through the inside of the mall, allegedly carrying the gun.

After investigating, detectives were guided to a Prince George’s County home, where the 19-year-old had shaved off his very obvious sideburns in an attempt to change his appearance. It is not clear why the young man stole the gun, nor was the gun recovered.

police_badge
Recently, a woman who was confronted for attempting to steal a pair of boots at the Arundel Mills Mall pepper sprayed 24-plus people trying to escape.*

The woman in question is from Baltimore, and took the boots, sprayed the store and ran. She also pulled a knife when a security guard stopped her outside the store, Off Broadway Shoes, in the middle of the day.

The security guard was able to get the knife despite the fact that the woman also pepper sprayed him while they struggled. He was also able to take the pepper spray from her and spray her. The police then took her into custody.

The security guard and an employee at Off Broadway Shoes were treated at Baltimore Washington Medical Center for exposure to pepper spray. All others on the scene were treated at the store by firefighters from Anne Arundel County.

The woman has been charged with many crimes, including robbery, theft, reckless endangerment and several counts of second-degree assault.

Theft of Mail Investigated by Howard County Police

Theft of Mail Subject of Howard County Police Investigation
Theft from mailboxes in Howard County dating back to October, 2012 caused Howard County law enforcement officers to issue an advisory to residents, reported The Baltimore Sun. The advisory asked residents to be alert for any irregularities with their mail or any missing items, and to take certain precautions to protect themselves. Thus far, the incidents have been limited to the Laurel and Clarksville areas in Howard County.

Theft of Outgoing Mail in Residents’ Mail Boxes

According to police, it appears that the perpetrators look for mailboxes with outgoing mail, as noted by mailboxes with red flags up. They steal checks from outgoing mail, change payee information on those checks, and then attempt to cash those checks at the victim’s bank. To prevent mail theft, police have recommended that residents refrain from placing mail containing checks in their mailboxes for pickup, instead dropping such items in a neighborhood collection box or bringing them to the nearest post office.

Theft of Mail Can be Avoided if Precautions are Taken

Postal authorities have also issued specific recommendations, including:

  • The prompt removal of all mail from your mailbox
  • Notification of all parties, including the sender and postal authorities, if you do not receive an anticipated check
  • Putting a hold on your mail while out of town
  • Immediately reporting if anyone other than a postal employee or homeowner is seen lurking near mailboxes
